Proposal on MAs in the PHEA Health Call

University of Athens takes the initiative to prepare a proposal to be submitted in the PHEA Health Call (http://ec.europa.eu/phea deadline May 23, 2008). So far institutes from Greece, UK, Italy, Sweden and France have expressed their interest.

Unfortunately our proposal on Modern Asclepieions to the COST Programme of the Commission of the European Union has been turned down.

We have also to report no progress on the front of the implementation of the Asclepieion Park of Athens. The Greek Government despite of its commitments avoids doing anything in this direction waiting for something miraculous to happen rather than to implement a well thought strategy.

The article of Dimitrios Sotiriou and Ken Boddy, entitled 'Modern Asclepieions: A vision for Health and Culture Services for All' has been published in the Proceedings of the Symposium on Enhancing Healthcare Education, Research & Practice through Technology, which has taken place in Hong Kong SAR, China, between July 9 and 11, 2007.

The Symposium was part of the 2007 International Conference on ICT in Teaching and Learning.

The Dutch architect Carel Weeber and the Finnish architectural firm Harris-Kjisik have won the international architectural competition Healthcare 2025, respectively with ‘Big Bang’ en ‘Fair care – care fair’ (Utrecht, September 25 2007).

The proposal of the Finish architects is inspired by the Modern Asclepieions concepts put forward by DS of the School of Medicine of the University of Athens in 1994. You can read the Jury Report and the Winners

A very successful HealthCom2007 ...

HealthCom2007 has been proved very successful and extremely well organised. The hospitality of the Taipei people and in particular Professor’s Heng-ShuenChen was exemplary.

I rate the Panel Discussion on ‘eHealth for Healthy Life: Role of Modern Asclepieions’ as very successful. More than 30 persons attended for countries all over the world.

It has been the consensus that Greece should take the initiative to propose a programme of work that an international network of person and institutions will be able to further promote the MAs concepts and produce concrete results.

Modern Asclepieions and OLPC ...

Recently Professor Nicholas Negreponte was received on March 16 2007 by the Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and they discussed the Greek digital strategy and the participation of Greece to the One Laptop Per Child or OLPC programme) we have learnt about the Greek activities related to the programme.

We are of the opinion that the OLPC programme can be coupled with the Modern Asclepieions initiative and boost the participation of the less developed countries (LDC) in the context of the WSIS initiative of ITU and WHO.

Our past efforts towards the above mentioned organisations and the Commission of the European Union had very little or no impact perhaps due to the Greek Government’s reluctance to endorse the concepts of MAs and to commit itself towards the proposed pilot application in the Athens area, the ‘Asclepieion Park of Athens’.

We will contact the Greek Information Society and we hope to be able to report something concrete in the near future.

Panel Discussion on Modern Asclepieions during the HealthCom2007 Conference …

The Organising Committee of the HealthCom2007 (www.healthcom2007.org) Conference to be held in Taipei Taiwan from June 19-22, 2007 has accepted the proposal of the School of Medicine of the University of Athens and a Panel Discussion will be organised with the title “e-Health for Healthy Life: Role of Modern Asclepieions”.

Proposal for a 'Modern Asclepieions Workshop' during the HealthCom2007

The HealthCom2007 Conference will take place in Taipei Taiwan from June 19-22, 2007. Information about the conference can be obtained from http://www.healthcom2007.org .

The Conference Organisers have in principle agreed on the organisation of a workshop on Modern Asclepieions to be organised by the School of Medicine of the University of Athens. The decision will be announced on March 14, 2007.

The title of the Workshop “e-Health for Healthy Life: Role of Modern Asclepieions”, has been proposed by Professor Pradeep Ray of The New South Wales University and has been endorsed by Leonid Androuchko of the UN International University and ITU expert and Dr Yunkap Kwankam of WHO and D. Sotiriou of the University of Athens.

Telemedicine in Future Health, Symposium, Salamanca, September 21-23, 2006

The Extraordinary Symposium of the European Society of Telemedicine took place in the magnificent historical university city of Salamanca, in Spain. The event was organised in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Health Computing and the Spanish Society of Medical Education.

The second day of the event D. Sotiriou presented to the participant the theme ‘From Telemedicine to Modern Asclepieions’. The Session was chaired by Professors Javier Calas and Gerard Comyn.

The Symposium gave also the opportunity to D. Sotiriou to present additional arguments in favour of the adoption of the ideas on which Modern Asclepieions are based to Professor Comyn who is Head of the Information Society Directorate General (known as INFOSOC) of the Commission of the European Union.

Version 1 of the document entitled 'Guidelines for Modern Asclepieions and Setting up of Services' is now available. The document explains what a Modern Asclepieion is and how it can be implemented. This paper acts as a background paper to the paper 'Guidelines on Telematic Infrastructure in Modern Asclepieions' and both were discussed at the ITU SG-2 Meeting, Geneva, September 7-9, 2006. There is one more paper 'Asclepieion Park of Athens: Design Considerations' which will be published by the Project Future Health of the INTERREG IIIC Programme. All papers are accessible via the English Version of the Asclepieions Web Site. Please help us to improve them; therefore comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

Doha follow-up and Modern Asclepieions ...

We have been encouraged to submit a document on the role of telecommunication to promote healthy life. This is a result of the decisions taken during the WTC 2006 which took place in Doha.

The document prepared is 'The Role of Telecommunication to the Promotion and Implementation of Healthy Life in Developing Countries and Modern Asclepieions' and was submitted on time to be considered by the Geneva June 22-23 Meeting on Question Q14 2/2.

Unfortunately we will not be able to participate. We expect that the Meeting will encourage us to continue on Modern Asclepieions Guidelines and other similar work.

The Swedish Policy on Health

D. Sotiriou was recieved on Tuesday December 6, 2005 by Ms Anna Frieberg, Coordinator of Health of the Region Skänen, Sweden and discussed issues of Swedish Health Policy and Health Education of citizens. This collaboration was in the framework of the Modern Asclepieions initiative of the School of Medicine of the University of Athens. The meeting was part of the participation of D. Sotiriou to the Semiannual Meeting of the Future Health Project (Lund, December 7-9, 2005).

WHO Resolution on eHealth

The WHO Resolution on eHealth is very relevant tο the concept of Modern Asclepieions. Unfortunately the officers of the Organisation refuse to learn about the concept and the impact of our proposal can have on spreading the benefits of the Information Society (related to WSIS as well ) to citizens.

Work on Guidelines is in progress. Ken Boddy of Edinburgh and Dimitrios Sotiriou of Athens have joined forces. Τhe introductory part is near completion while the guidelines part is progressing. We hope that professor Pradeep Ray of Australia will join the effort. The draft will be posted on the blog and comments and suggestions will be sought.

In document 2/REP/037-E of the Question 14-1/2: Application of telecommunications in health care, the Rapporteur wrote under the title: 7. Proposals for a revised or new Question:'The representative from Australia proposed to include telecommunications development and management solutions based on the Modern Asclepieions (MA) model suggested by Greece in 2004. This would involve e-health kiosks and portals supported by the emerging telecommunications technologies, such as mobile wireless, satellite and broadband. This would provide a great opportunity to overcome the digital divide through e-health based on the latest telecommunications technologies. The representative from Greece supported the idea and offered to develop (with Australia) a more detailed account of this topic'.This is a positive outcome and a document will be worked out ASAP. The meeting was attended by Dimitrios Sotiriou. The representative of Australia was professor Pradeep Ray.

Our assessment about the Week HERMES is as follows:
1. Timing / Schools already closed or on examination period. Examination period for Universities as well
2. Promotion / of last minute, no visits by journalists, tv nearly absent (all themes necessitate preparatory work and amble time)
3. Web promotion / very weak to none
4. Government / absence of decision makers despite of inauguration fanfare

Science and Technology Week / Greek Programme HERMES

The University of Athens will exhibit a series of innovative products and services from June 30, to July 7, to the splendid Zappeio Exhibition and Conference Centre in Athens.

Among the exchibitors is the Medical Physics Laboratory of the School of Medicine, with the Portal of the Modern Asclepieion Park of the School of Medicine.

Despite the early stages of the Portal development this is a very good opportunity for promoting the ideas of citizen empowerment via telematic means in Health, Culture, Environment and Social interaction and the relevant services in an especially designed Park.

Modern Asclepieions are new types of the famous Asclepieions of the ancient Greek world where people were flocking for a cure. Asclepieions soon became places promoting health and culture in an integral and harmonious way. In Modern Asclepieions telematic technologies can make reality the concepts of `equity of access` and `citizen empowerment`, while at the same time social interaction and participation can be promoted for the benefit of all.
